ProPresenter Screen Setup for Church: Get Your Displays Working Right
How to set up ProPresenter screens on Mac — connect displays, fix the Sequoia limbo issue, and configure your audience and stage outputs.
ProPresenter starts with your screens. Before you touch song lyrics, arrangements, stage display, or the live stream, you have to get your displays connected and configured right — because if that foundation isn’t working, NOTHING downstream will.
Here’s the scene I walk into all the time at churches:
- The TV or projector is plugged in, but ProPresenter shows nothing on it.
- The audience output button is on, and still — a black screen.
- Someone is deep in ProPresenter’s settings, convinced the software is broken.
Nine times out of ten, ProPresenter is fine. The evidence almost always points somewhere else: the operating system never actually saw the display in the first place. Let me walk you through exactly how ProPresenter outputs to multiple displays on a Mac, from that first blank layout all the way to a separate audience output and stage display. (I’m demonstrating on a Mac, but the same thinking applies on Windows.)

Get Content to the Output First
When you first install ProPresenter on a fresh computer — assuming you haven’t loaded my ProPresenter Quick Start Template — you’re going to see a blank layout. That’s normal.
The quickest way to get something showing is to open the media bin with the button in the top right, drag a graphic from Finder into one of the playlists, and click on it. Now you’ve got content in the output window inside ProPresenter.
But you’ll notice there’s still nothing on your connected display. That’s the next problem to solve — and it’s usually not a ProPresenter problem at all.
Make Sure the Operating System Sees the Display
My golden rule: until the operating system can see your connected display, there is no reason to even load ProPresenter.
I’ve watched too many volunteers sit inside ProPresenter, frustrated and blaming the software, when the real issue was that the Mac never registered the screen.
For this first display, I’m using the built-in HDMI port on my MacBook Pro, with the cable going to HDMI 1 on the TV. Turn the TV on, set its source to HDMI 1, and your desktop should pop up.
If it doesn’t, don’t panic — because macOS changed something critical you need to know about. On macOS newer than Sequoia 15, the Mac no longer auto-detects and extends a new display by default. Instead it puts the display in a kind of limbo: a blue button appears in the menu bar, top right, and you have to click it and choose Mirror or Extend. Only then does the display show up in System Settings under Displays.
Older versions of macOS assumed “extend” unless you told them otherwise. Sequoia 15 and newer don’t. Windows needs the same kind of attention in its own display settings. Either way: confirm the OS sees the screen before you go any further.
Configure Screens: Assign the Display
Once macOS sees the display and you’ve set it to extend, open ProPresenter — and you still might not get output. There are two reasons for that.
First, the audience output button might not be turned on. Turn it on — but it still won’t do anything yet, because the screen hasn’t been assigned.
Go to Screens → Configure Screens. Under Screen 1, change the placeholder to Display 1 — that’s your external display. Not sure which display is which? Use the identify option and ProPresenter will flash it up on the screen itself so you can confirm. Assign Display 1 to Screen 1, and now you can toggle the output on and off right there, or from the main operator screen.
That’s it — content is now flowing from ProPresenter to your audience output.
Add a Stage Display as a Second Output
Now let’s give your worship team their own screen. Since the built-in HDMI on my MacBook Pro is taken, I’ll connect the second TV with a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
Back in Screens → Configure Screens, look to the left side and down to Stage Screen — if it’s not there, click the plus and select the display. So to review: Display 1 is Screen 1, your audience output; Display 2 is your stage display. You can toggle each on and off independently.
At first the stage screen may show nothing, or default to current-and-next-slide text. To build your own, go to Edit Layouts and create a new blank stage layout. Drop in a rectangle, set a standard size like 1280x720, set it to be a screen preview of Screen 1, and make it full screen. One quirk to know: sometimes after editing you need to go to Show and update the stage screen before the change takes. Now your band sees exactly what the congregation sees.
Stage display goes a lot deeper than mirroring — different layouts for lyrics, chords, timers, and switching between them live. Know Your Cable Distances
The setup I just walked through used short cables, so HDMI was fine. But cable distance matters more than people think:
- HDMI: 30 feet is the realistic maximum — especially for setups that have to work every single Sunday.
- Longer runs: use HDMI-to-SDI converters. Computer → converter → up to 300 feet of SDI → convert back to HDMI at the TV or projector. Some TVs and projectors will even power the SDI converter off their USB port.
- Match the cabling to the room: your main auditorium and broadcast feed deserve SDI; a youth room on a short HDMI run is perfectly fine.
When You Need More Outputs Than the Computer Can Give
Every Mac has a hard ceiling on how many displays it can drive, and it varies by machine and chip. On my M4 MacBook Pro, two external displays — one native HDMI plus one USB-C adapter — maxes it out. That’s plenty for me, because the MacBook is my simple-events and backup machine.
A Mac Studio can drive five outputs over USB-C to HDMI. And when you need dedicated outputs beyond what the computer natively supports, there’s hardware for exactly that: I walk through the Blackmagic Monitor 3G approach in this video, and a DeckLink Duo 2 card in a Sonnet Express enclosure takes it even further. That’s how you get separate feeds for the audience screen, the live stream, and the stage display all at once.
The point: figure out how many independent outputs your building actually needs, then make sure your computer — or an external output device — can deliver them.

- Get content into ProPresenter’s output window first, so you know the software side works.
- Make sure the operating system sees the display before you blame ProPresenter — on Sequoia 15 and newer, that means the blue menu-bar button and Extend.
- In Configure Screens, assign your display to Screen 1 and turn the audience output on.
- Add the second display as a Stage Screen, then build a stage layout that previews Screen 1.
- Respect cable distances — SDI past 30 feet — and know your computer’s display limit before you plan more outputs.
