HDMI vs SDI vs Fiber: Choosing Video Cable for Church & Live Events
HDMI, SDI, fiber, or the network? The five guidelines we use on every church and event install — and the distance limits that decide.
Every video problem in a church or live event eventually becomes a cable problem. The projector that flickers when someone touches the run, the TV in the lobby that works “most Sundays,” the 100-foot HDMI cable that seemed like such a simple answer — all the same root cause: the wrong cable type for the distance.
The good news is that choosing correctly isn’t complicated. Distance makes most of the decisions for you. Here are the five guidelines I use on every install and every mobile event.

The Five Guidelines
- HDMI’s job is to get from the device to a converter. That’s it. Not across the room.
- SDI is the reliable workhorse from a source to a destination — under 300 feet, it’s the answer.
- Ethernet cable is not a video cable. If video needs to ride the network, use a network protocol built for it — NDI for video, Dante for audio.
- Fiber HDMI looks cool, but past 300 feet, traditional fiber optic is more reliable — and reusable for other signals later.
- Feeding a TV across the room? Run SDI and put the converter at the TV, powered there whenever possible.
Everything below is those five rules with the reasoning attached.
Why Long HDMI Runs Betray You
HDMI is everywhere — full-size on switchers, TVs, and converters, mini and micro on cameras — which makes the 100-foot HDMI cable feel like the obvious move. It isn’t. The longer the HDMI run, the weaker the signal, and somewhere past 50 feet you’re gambling. For your living room, fine. For a signal a congregation is depending on, no.
So use HDMI for what it’s good at: the short hop from the computer, camera, or switcher to a converter — then let a real transmission cable do the distance.
SDI: The Under-300-Foot Answer
SDI has a thick copper core that gives it strength and reliability, native connections on most video switchers, and cheap bidirectional HDMI/SDI converters (Decimator makes the ones I reach for) to bridge into HDMI-only devices at either end.
A real-world example: at a recent mobile event I ran a 100-foot SDI line to the venue’s projector and another to a stage-display TV in the back, converters at each screen, both fed from a DeckLink Duo 2 on the ProPresenter machine. That’s my standard pattern for any multi-screen setup — and it just works, every service.
Two practical notes: buy flexible SDI cable if you’re coiling it every week (the stiff stuff is for permanent installs only), and if you’re mounting a converter behind a screen, our wall mount for 3G/12G-SDI converters keeps it clean and serviceable ($95).
Fiber: When 300 Feet Isn’t Enough
Copper — SDI and ethernet alike — degrades past about 300 feet. Beyond that, fiber is the only honest answer, and it comes in two flavors:
Fiber HDMI cables are the all-in-one option. They work, but they’re not bidirectional, longer runs can need a booster, and the cable is forever an HDMI cable.
Traditional fiber optic (single-mode, LC connectors is what I use) is the better long-term play: with converters at each end it can carry video today and networking tomorrow, between buildings, for effectively unlimited distance — signals run for miles. The pieces are a fiber converter (Blackmagic’s optical-fiber SDI converters handle up to 4K) plus an SFP module on each end. Those modules are sold separately because they’re rated by signal type and distance — the little transceiver is what turns your signal into laser light and back.
Between buildings on a campus? Traditional fiber, every time. You’ll re-use that run for a decade.
What About Ethernet?
The cable itself is the wrong tool — its small conductors were designed for networking, not video. But the network is a great video transport: NDI moves video over your existing infrastructure reliably, and Dante does the same for audio. That’s the distinction that keeps you out of trouble: don’t push a video signal down an ethernet cable; put video on the network properly.

One caution from experience: gear prices move constantly — check current pricing on converters and SFP modules rather than trusting any number you find in an older video, including mine.
